Outdoor Wi-Fi Considerations
Reliable outdoor Wi-Fi requires more than just adding an access point. In this video, I walk through a real-world outdoor Wi-Fi installation using the Grandstream GWN7670LR and a FastCabling outdoor PoE passthrough switch. Most home networks are designed as if everything stops at the exterior wall. Once you start extending Ethernet and PoE outdoors, new considerations come into play—grounding, surge protection, cable selection, routing, and equipment placement. In this video, I provide a high-level overview of how I designed and installed a reliable outdoor Wi-Fi solution using enterprise-grade hardware: • Grandstream GWN7670LR outdoor access point - https://amzn.to/4k0bhhD • FastCabling outdoor PoE passthrough switch • Grandstream GWN7822P PoE switch • PoE++ Ethernet Surge Protector - https://amzn.to/4k0bhhD I focus on the design decisions behind the install, not just the hardware itself—why components were placed where they were, how power and data were safely extended outdoors, and what considerations matter for long-term reliability. This is not a “maximum power” approach. The goal is consistent outdoor coverage using proper placement, proper materials, and proper protection. Topics covered in the video: • Outdoor Wi-Fi design considerations • PoE passthrough switching • Grounding and surge protection • Outdoor-rated cabling • Access point placement • Clean cable routing If you’re planning an outdoor network project, this walkthrough should help you avoid common mistakes and design something that lasts.
